A truly stunning gilt brass clock set by Japy Freres standing well over 2 feet in height.
Particularly charming are the mythical dogs dangling from the candelabra by belts round their tummies, stationed to ward off evil spirits. The overall look of the set is of a stout castle, this is a very heavy and well modelled clock set with much of the original gilding being bright and clean.
The large brass dial is mounted with 12 individual enamel cartouches. It has a beautiful and heavy hobnail bezel mounted with the original convex glass. It is complete with original blued steel hands.
The clock has a fretted back to allow the pendulum to be seen and the candelabra are modelled in the round - the clock set would look great from both sides for example in the middle of a room as well as against a wall.
The French Japy Freres movement is of excellent quality and runs for 8 days and strikes on a bell. It has the Japy Freres 'Grande Médaille D'Honneur' mark on the movement backplate, dating the clock to before 1888. It is in excellent, clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum has also been replaced. Click the video clip below to hear the clock running!
Condition of the clock and candelabra is excellent. Gilding is worn in places and is bright and clean. Candelabra arms are slightly distorted, a sconce has an old repair and some of the drip pans and nozzle inserts are slightly distorted. Dial is also excellent, just some very slight wear to the cartouches. Original glass is a little wobbly and bubbly as usual with old glass.
Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required. A magnificent clock set by a renown maker, ready for you to display!
