This is a wonderful and very powerful pencil drawing of a seated lion by Silvia Baker Hay, the British writer and artist who was born in Malta in 1893 and who died in 1970. The drawing is well framed with a gold border. Inscribed verso, and dated 1963-64.
She had close relationships with Augustus John, Paul Nash, George Moore and Will Rothenstein. Her papers are now held by Yale University.
Sylvia Baker Hay was an itinerant artist and world traveller. She spent the 1930s working as an illustrator and undertook a series of paintings of zoo animals for the Manchester Guardian. When her husband, the art collector Athole Hay, died suddenly in 1937 she sold their house and moved to Tangier, then on to Jamaica, Hollywood, Bali, Singapore and India. She returned to London in 1944.
