An 8-Day Longcase Clock by George Hancock, Midsomer Norton

Description

A good quality late Georgian Somerset moon phase longcase clock. A swan neck hood pediment surmounted by a brass finial. Corinthium capped fluted hood side columns and shaped rear hood edgings. A wavy hood door as often seen on clocks from this area. Fine casework with banded inlays to the choice flame mahogany veneers. An arched painted dial with lunar moon phases to the arch and ladies to the corners depicting the 4 seasons. A date aperture and seconds dial. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell.

The Hancock family of clockmakers are well documented in A J Moores' 'Somerset Clockmakers' book. They worked in Yeovil, Frome and outlining areas. George Hancock of Midsomer Norton is recorded as working from 1828 to 1839.
