This is a very fine mahogany veneered verge bracket clock by Joshua Martineau, St Martins Court London circa 1780.
He was apprenticed to his father (also named John) circa 1750 and went into partnership with his father in 1784.o
The double fusee 8 day duration movement retains its original verge escapement and has a plain back plate engraved with the makers name .It strikes the hours on a bell and has a pull repeat facility together with a mock pendulum aperture.
The attractive 6 3/4 in arched dial has a subsidiary strike silent dial in the arch and has a well matted centre and an arched plate depicting the makers name and adddress together with a small date aperture .The silvered brass and engraved chapter ring is highlighted by well cast spandrels
The break arched case with triple pad top is surmounted by a carrying handle . The sides are glazed to allow the movement to be seen. The front door has brass banding and feet.
Worthy of note are the original pierced hands.
The clock is in perfect working order having been expertly restored by Overton Clocks of Chesterfield.
As can be seen from the images this clock is in excellent condition throughout and is ready to be displayed in the home. The flame mahogany case is a lovely colour.
?This is 17 1/2 inches tall (handle up) 16 inches (handle down)The width is 11 inches and the depth 7 3/4.
