A Fascinating Large Pair Of Japanese Lacquer Candlesticks - Ashinaga & Tenaga

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large and unusual pair of late Edo /early Meiji period 1868-1912 lacquer candlesticks, the large and decorative sticks have been formed as the mythical characters Ashinaga and Tenaga , they are usually depicted fishing with Ashinaga standing in the water and Tenaga using his long arms to reach down for the fish , according to fables Ashinaga''s legs can reach six metres while Tenagas arms can reach three , a formidable pair of fishermen , the portrayals are often very humorous as is the case here , the facial expressions and the muscular limbs being further detailed with polychrome lacquer decoration , a very unusual and large pair of decorative candlesticks from around 1860/70 late Edo period , a great focal and talking point in your room or addition to your Japanese works of art collection .
