A superb oil on panel by the well known marine and landscape painter James Webb 1825-1895.

A very atmospheric sea piece depicting a stricken vessel with missing rigging being tossed by stormy waves. The sky is dramatic with the lowering sun, desparate onlooking fisherfolk watch from the harbour mouth with hope she'll be blown inland for rescue.
Good condition, signed lower left.

James Webb was marine and landscape painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1853 and 1888 , as well as the British Institution, Suffolk st. the new Watercolur society and Grosvenor Gallery.
Webb painted coastal scenes in England and Wales, Holland and France and views of the Rhine in a robust, naturalistic style with a great attention to atmoshere of light rendered through sky and weather as with more description
