Antique, English Burr Walnut and Brass Cigar Cabinet / Humidor C.1880

19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

About as fine as they get, this large Burr Walnut cigar cabinet is a magnificent quality box beautifully made.

Each corner has a carved column with a polished brass base and brass mounts around the columns, all beautifully hand engraved. All of the drawer pulls are again hand-engraved.

This cabinet would have come from a very fine house, this type of box was used for entertaining, the top two drawers easily accessed by releasing the top (unlocked) shorter bar. These two drawers would have been placed on the table, you can see that they are finished in burr walnut on all sides, used to serve; the underside reveals Satinwood used to finish.

The bottom (locked) drawers are accessed with the working key releasing the long bar which then allows the drawers to be accessed. Various cigars would be stored in these drawers and a variety placed in the top two drawers ready for table service by the Butler.

The interior of the drawers is lined in Cedar wood which is what kept cigars fresh; this is not officially a Humidor as these are modern inventions to regulate the humidity within; it is the Cedar lining that did this job well over 100 years ago. Each of the drawers has an adjustable / removable divider to customise the interior's configuration. The drawers will accommodate a maximum cigar length of 6 1/4".

Truly the finest in excellent condition, minor wear commensurate with age. Dating to the late Victorian period.

The footprint measures 17 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 15" tall.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the late nineteenth century, cigar cabinets were designed as desktop display and storage items for gentlemens smoking accoutrements. Crafted to maintain tobacco in appropriate conditions, these pieces reflected the eras social smoking customs and high demand for specialized cabinetry.

Victorian humidors were commonly constructed using a solid timber frame faced with fine decorative veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. Interior compartments were often lined with cedar wood to absorb excess moisture, and external elements featured brass mounts, handles, and locking mechanisms.

Authentic pieces display distinct period features including hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, stamped brass locks, original key escutcheons, and natural ageing or patination on the wood and metalwork. Genuine burr walnut exhibits complex, swirling grain patterns that vary across the surface.

A cigar cabinet works well as a functional desktop storage item on a study desk, a library shelf, or placed atop a dining room sideboard. Its detailed timber figure and brassware provide a textured focal point when paired with contemporary art or minimalist decor.

Preserve burr walnut veneers by keeping the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading. Apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood, and clean brass fittings with a soft, dry cloth to protect the natural historical patina.
