A fine early 19th Century gilt bronze Réaumur column thermometer surmounted by a super quality statue of Napoleon in uniform with great coat and sword. Mounted on a white marble square base. The Réaumur scale was named after Rene-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur who created it in 1731. Widely used in France during the 18th and early 19th Century it was eventually superceded by more accurate mercury thermometers, but it continued to be widely used in brewing and cheese production.
Circa 1815.
