In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The corners and edges are bound in brass with matching brass plate escutcheon and cartouche.
Inside, the box is fitted with a black leather writing surface with a gold tooled edge. It comes with both of its original glass inkwells and a pen tray. There is a secret compartment with 3 small drawers below the front leather surface that springs open by lifting a piece of wood next to the inkwell.
The box is in very good condition for its age with a beautiful patina and displays very nicely. The leather writing surface is showing signs of age and is worn along the crease but still looks good inside the box and is usable. There are some small old chips and minor splits on the sides of the outside of the box which have been repaired and do not detract from the overall appearance of the box. There are other general signs of light use and age but nothing detrimental.
