A Victorian Cast Iron Serpent & Twig Pattern Garden Seat Or Bench, Circa 1860

A Victorian cast iron garden seat in the Serpent & Twig pattern and dating to circa 1860. This beautiful rustic naturalistic casting is based on the English oak tree and depict branches adorned with oak leaves, acorns and intertwined serpents. The pattern was designed by McDowell, Stevenson & Co of Glasgow, circa 1840 and was later copied by other foundries, most notably by the John Finch Foundry, in Dudley Worcestershire. This particular seat is stamped with a number to the back legs.
 
In very good structural condition with no signs of repair, the white gloss paintwork needs minor touching up where some rust spots starting to appear.

Height - 32 1/2in (82.5cm)
 
Seat area - 22 1/2in wide x 15in deep x 17in high (57cm x 38cm x 43cm)
