Description

An “Old English” Pattern Chess Set, circa 1850

one side in boxwood, the other side in ebony, the king 10.1cm high, the pawn 4.4cm high, in a 19th century mahogany box with a green paper lining, 22.7cm wide, 15.6cm deep.

Stock Reference Number: VS 1449

One of my favourite patterns. “Old English" pattern chess sets were popular in the 19th century and especially before the introduction of the Staunton pattern in 1849. This is an attractive example with pleasing figuring to the ebony.

Decent sets are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
