Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Hair combs gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, functioning as both functional fasteners and decorative tiaras. Tortoiseshell was particularly prized for its durability, warm tones, and malleability when heated, making it a preferred medium for intricate shaping and stone setting.

Authentic period hair combs were predominantly constructed from natural tortoiseshell, horn, or early polymers like celluloid. Embellishments frequently featured cut paste stones, which were leaded glass gems designed to simulate diamonds, set into silver or silver-plated brass mounts.

Genuine tortoiseshell exhibits irregular, natural mottled patterns under magnification rather than uniform printed dots. Authentic paste stones from the era typically feature closed-back foil settings, hand-cut facets, and micro-claw or bezel mounts integrated into the crest.

Small decorative accessories like hair combs can be framed inside velvet-lined shadow boxes or placed atop marble vanity trays alongside vintage perfume bottles. Mounting them on custom acrylic stands inside glass cloches also highlights their silhouette while providing protection.

Store the comb in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, excessive humidity, and heat sources, which can cause organic materials to warp or crack. Clean gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical solvents, water immersion, or liquid polishes that damage foil-backed stones.
