A superbly heavy and wide chair with a high back, the short upholstered arms set well back from the seat rail and connected in a gently curving support.
The arms and legs are fluted and beaded. The top of each arm is carved with anthemion and drop bell husks. The square legs have anthemion carved spandrels and drop bell husks. The stretchers set at the diagonal with wrapped knuckles and shaped joints.
The legs terminate in original small brass casters. The chair has been newly upholstered in the finest quality English Gainsborough Company hand woven fabric, correct for period. The original frame is complete and very strong beneath the fabric.
The serpentine shaped seat and back particularly well proportioned and well padded - the chair is extremely comfortable.
Condition is excellent with only light wear and a few superficial dings. Extremely robust and sturdy with no creaks, wobbles, loose joints, worm or damage. One back leg has small non-structural and professional restoration to a chip - almost impossible to see even on very close inspection.
Colour is particularly good and the chair has the talcolm smooth feel and soft patina that only time, wax and use can produce.
This chair was purchased from the private estate of a Lloyds name and long standing collector of fine quality antique furniture. Details of provenance will be provided to the purchaser with the chair.
Dimensions are: 39 inches high, 29 inches wide at feet and 23 inches wide between arms. 29 inches deep max. Chair seat is 22 inches front to back, height of seat from floor is 17 inches and height of arms from floor is 26 inches and height of back from seat is 25 inches.
