Description

An impressive and very fine quality late Regency period ENGLISH MANTEL CLOCK in perfect working order.

The case is surmounted by a gilded bronze bust of the Duke of Wellington on a plinth, with ormolu mounts below. The dial, with its finely cast ormolu bezel, is flanked by classical figures of muses, whilst the whole clock is mounted on a white marble base applied with ormolu swags flanking a central mask.

The 8-day English movement is chain-driven fusee and is signed (engraved) to the backplate: "French, Royal Exchange, LONDON".14ins (36cms) wide.

***James Moore FRENCH (1808-1842) was a prominent and highly regarded clockmaker who made watches; clocks and marine chronometers. He was based in Cornhill, Royal Exchange from 1837-1842.
