An Exceptionally Rare 17thc Church Pew with Misericords - Royal Provenance

Description

An exceptionally rare 17th century church pew with Misericords from the chapel of Château de Colombes once the home of Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles 1st King of England.

The richly carved sides with scrolling foliage and flowers with cherub heads at the forefront. The back consisting of two large fielded panels above with two smaller fielded panels below. The drop down seats lift up to reveal two intricately carved misericords, one consisting of a fleur de lis design and the other the flaming sacred heart suspended by a chain, hanging above two overlapping branches twinned together and having dense leafy foliage with buds.

This pew has had some restorations through out its life as nearly all of them do, commiserate with age. The carvings are superb and it is in very good condition and has excellent colour an patination.

Royal Provenance - From chapel of Château de Colombes.

Owned by Henrietta Maria of France (daughter of Henri IV and Marie de Médici and sister of Louis XIII, she married in 1625 the future Charles I, King of England and She returned to Paris after Charles's death, and from there to Colombes, where she lived from 1657 until her death on 10/09/1669.

On the 28th July 1915 this pew was sent by Bois Colombes to Paris ( original labels still on the back). It's where about's was unknown until it was purchased in the Parisian art trade in 1981 and has remained in a private collection in Münster, Germany until now.
