Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the Edwardian era.
The brass-bound mahogany case opens to reveal about 60 (sixty!) instruments, including: scalpels; catheters; a trepanning saw; clamps; many pairs of scissors; saws; a tourniquet and various other somewhat 'gruesome' implements! A number are in hallmarked silver, indicating they were for internal use.
This was almost certainly for use by a Surgeon Officer, for operations carried out in the field.
