In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Regency era.
There is a secret compartment below the writing surface that springs open by lifting the piece of wood next to the left hand inkwell, revealing 3 small secret drawers. There is a small paper retailer's label inside the box for "W.Lowe, Turner & c. 47 College Green. Bristol".
The box comes with its original working key. The lock is stamped W.R and a crown for King William IV which dates it to around 1830.
The writing slope is excellent quality and is in good condition for its age with a beautiful patina. It displays very well inside and out with no major damages. There are a few small chips, some minor knocks and light surface scratches around the box but nothing detrimental. The inkwells are not original but in good condition and display well. The velvet writing surface is in good condition with just some light wear and the box has been gently cleaned and polished.
