Description

The Turkmen Engsi was made to hang at the entrance of the Turkmen yurt as a door and symbolised the gateway to Paradise. The pre-Islamic cross in the centre created the symbolic 4-gardens of Paradise and the panel at the base, the gateway to Paradise. The pentagonal shape at the top of the cross is referred to as the 'kejebe' and symbolised power and fertility.

This engsi, which is in very good overall condition, was made by Teke tribes around 1870-1880 and incorporates a beautiful, glowing natural madder-red.

Size: 1.40m x 1.30m (4' 7" x 4' 3").
