A 17th Century Box Makers Coffer

Description

A fine 17th century carved and inlaid coffer constructed from oak. This coffer was most likely made by a box maker the front and back consist of a wainscot paneled form and the sides, lid and underneath are of plank construction.

The front has three panels all of a inlaid geometric design, inset in a molded frame around the panels. To the centre of the top rail resides the original lock and lock plate surround by rows of knulling which is followed through to the stiles and uprights in a more elongated form. The bottom molded rail has rows of punch work design and is supported by a pair of large silhouette spandrels.

The coffer has had some old restorations, commiserate with age.

Fantastic colour and patination.
