English Porcelain Mastiff Staffordshire Dog C1840

Description

This ENGLISH PORCELAIN MASTIFF, with his tongue hanging out, bears the impressed number 305 to the base and was made by SAMUEL ALCOCK of BURSLEM around 1840/50.

A similar MASTIFF is illustrated in 'Dogs in English Porcelain of the 19th Century' by Dennis G. Rice, Page 124, Plate 198.

This Mastiff is in good condition with no restoration.

Staffordshire figures are earthenware and porcelain decorative sculptures produced in the Staffordshire pottery district of England from the eighteenth century onwards. These figures commonly depicted animals, historic personalities, or pastoral themes intended for domestic display.
