Working in the Fields - Antique Oil Painting

1920 - 1940
Description

Signed Oil on Panel signed Amedee Degreef (1878 - 1968 - Belgium School). The panel shows two women harvesting potatoes and is mounted in an attractive frame of the period. The painting has a soft palette and probably dates form around 1930-40.

Amedee Degreef was born in Auderghem in 1878 and was the son of the celebrated painter Jean-Baptiste Degreef. Amedee Degreef initially wanted to pursue a musical profession but on the advice of his father, who had recognised his artistic talents. He attended the Academy of Brussels. Upon graduating he joined the artistic group, `Le Sillon' and settled in the outskirts of Brussels. His work is somewhat realistic with a hint of a post-Impressionism. A painter of diverse subjects, there exist landscapes, still-lifes, marines and portraits amongst his oeuvre. Many of his landscapes show scenes in the Forest of Soigne and Brabant areas of Belgium. This extremely pleasing example of his work dates to around 1910 and was painted at the height of his career. In the landmark book, ‘De School van Tervuren’ by Herman De Vilder and Maurits Wynants a work from the same period is illustrated.

Paintings by Amedee Degreef have been acquired for the Belgian National Collection.
