A very fine and rare giltwood barometer by Wartenburg of Lytham, England and Paris, France. This barometer depicts the battles of Baddajoz, Assaye, and Vittoria. The giltwood depicts the life and times of The Duke of Wellington. The top pediment shows his hat, his gold braid, his sword, supported by cannons and the bottom pediment includes a metal disc - which itself is made by Allen & Moore of Birmingham, England - commemorating "Both as soldier and statesman he earned the title of father of his country. Born May 1, 1769 Died Sep 14 1852". Between this pediment and the silver dial of the barometer is his embossed head. The dial itself is signed Wartenburg, Lytham. This is clearly the work of the same man who received barometers from Paris, France in the second half of the 19th century. Between the barometer dial and the top pediment is a thermometer depicted in Fahrenheit. This barometer celebrates the life of one of the greatest military leaders and statesmen of the 19th century, and such a barometer is unlikely to appear on the market for some considerable time.
