Superb Walnut and Gilded Bookcase

19th century
Description

An exceptional quality, very tall, London made burr walnut bookcase from the Victorian period, of shallow inverted breakfront form with 4 shaped and arched doors and full width drawer. Base doors with burr walnut panels, the top doors with original plate mirror and good quality mahogany backing. The cornice has a pierced and carved crown with gilded decoration. The door mouldings, stiles, corbel carvings, drawer and plinth all with original subtle gilding. Locks by "Hobbs + Co" with original key. This fine Victorian bookcase bears the brass plaque of the maker " Hewetson & Milner, The Exchange, 211, 212 Tottenham Court Road" London.

In superb original condition with 2 slight speckled spots on right hand door mirror (visible on photos).

If you are interested in this bookcase and it is slightly too tall, the cresting crown is easily unscrewed to reduce the maximum height to 104.25" ...265cm.
