Foden of Leek Longcase Clock

18th century
Description

A Georgian period Staffordshire longcase clock. A well proportioned oak case of small proportions with crossbanding to the hood and trunk sides. A re-entrant base panel with crossbanding. A nice feature of the original gilt floral painted panel at the hood top. Fluted hood side columns. An 8-day duration mechanism with date mark of 1768 engraved. Hourly striking on the bell. A quality brass and silvered dial with date aperture and engraving to the inner dial edges.

Thomas Foden of Congleton is recorded in Baillies' 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World' book as working from 1753-1785, this example signed from Leek.
