Fine Antique English Coromandel Decanter / Drinks Box C.1880

19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A truly magnificent drinks / decanter box made from exotic Coromandel mounted with polished brass mounts inset with a plethora of different kinds of cabochon cut and polished onyx stones.

I would expect the box to made by the top-notch G Betjemann & Sons of London but I couldn't find a label which surprises me for such a top quality piece of furniture.

The lid lifts (complete with a working key) and the swing doors open to reveal three fabulous circular cut crystal decanters, twelve small liquor glasses each in it's own gilded cradle. Behind the decanters is a gilded bronze drinks tray / salver with an engraved front and a central armorial crest. The underside is marked with the crossed arrows mark for Creswick & Co. of Sheffield.

Beneath all of this is a cedar lined cigar drawer, with adjustable dividers to accommodate a variety of cigars.

An impressive piece for the finest of homes in excellent condition dating to the late Victorian era, around 1880. 15" x 10" x 15" tall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Emerging in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, these boxes combine Gothic architectural details, such as pierced brass straps and cabochon mounts, with exotic timbers engineered to house and display spirits securely.

High-grade exotic woods including coromandel, walnut, and mahogany were paired with pierced brass mounts, alongside hand-cut lead crystal decanters and silver-plated accessories.

Authentic pieces exhibit distinct dark and light striped graining in the coromandel veneer, hand-cut brass strapwork, working period lock mechanisms, and heavy lead crystal decanters fitted precisely to the interior.

Positioned on a sideboard, bar cart, or console table, the dark timber and detailed brass strapwork provide an architectural focal point that complements classic and contemporary entertaining spaces.

Dust the wooden exterior with a soft microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the polished finish, avoiding harsh liquid polish on brass mounts or abrasive cleaners on cut crystal.
