Stephen Taylor exhibited at the RA, 48 portraits, BI (29), SBA (40) between 1817-1849. He worked as a portrait painter in Southampton, 1808, Winchester 1817-1821 and Oxford 1823-1826, London 1827-1849. He gained a reputation for animal paintings, particularly of birds and dogs. he was related to the artist Henry Taylor.
