Antique French Onyx and Bronze Clock, by H F Moreau and Japy Freres

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A stunning antique French clock, the large ormolu mounted onxy columnar plinth housing the movement by Japy Freres and the superb antique bronze figure by sculptor Hippolyte Francois Moreau. The figure is La Rosé, she holds a loft a rose in a classical garden, delicately depicted in beautifully patinated bronze.

The dial is porcelain enamel on copper with floral swags and finely cut brass hands.

The French movement is of high quality and is by Japy Freres. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a gong. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

The model for this superb bronze figure was produced by the renown sculptor Hippolyte Francois Moreau, born in Dijon in 1832, the second son of Jean-Baptisite Moreau. A member of the fabulous Moreau family, he first exhibited at the Salon 1859 and had a long and successful career exhibiting until 1913. He is well known for his allegorical figures of young women. His signature is inscribed to the base of the figure.

Reference: Pierre Kjellberg, Bronzes of the 19th century 1994.

Condition of the case is very good, the onyx is clean with a good polish and some slight discolouration and nibbles to the edges. The ormolu is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration, there are two small pieces missing from the rear of the case and the beaded ring to the top is slightly distorted. The bronze figure is in excellent condition with a lovely original patination with some wear to the high spots as you expect with an antique figure. The dial is also in excellent condition with no damage. There are a couple of light scratches to the glass.

H Moreau signature to the base of the figure. Japy Freres clockmaker's mark on the movement backplate.

Complete with pendulum and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
