An original 16th Century map of Ireland by Jodocus Hondius and Gerardus Mercator. Aperture 37cm x 50 cm, external size of frame 50cm x 70cm (20inches x 27.5 inches). Hand-coloured and first published in Amsterdam as Mercator’s atlas Sive Cosmographicae in 1606.
Gerardus Mercator 5 March 1512 – 2 December 1594) was a 16th-century Southern Dutch cartographer, geographer and cosmographer. He was renowned for creating the 1569 world map based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing as straight lines—an innovation that is still employed in nautical charts.
Following Mercator's death his family prepared Mercator’s life works as an atlas for publication. The title itself provides Mercator's definition of a new meaning for the word "Atlas": ‘Atlas Sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Figura’ which may be translated as "Atlas or cosmographical meditations upon the fabric of the world and the figure of the fabrick’d” or, more colloquially, as Atlas or cosmographical meditations upon the creation of the universe, and the universe as created.
Mercator’s family sold the copper plates to Jodocus Hondius in 1604. He transformed the atlas. Almost 40 extra maps were added and in 1606 , this, new edition appeared under his name but with full acknowledgement that most maps were created by Mercator. Hondius was an accomplished businessman and under his guidance the Atlas was the success it had never been in Mercator’s lifetime. 29 editions were published between 1609 and 1641, including one in English. Eventually the atlas became out-of-date and by the middle of the seventeenth century the publications of map-makers such as Joan Blaeu and Frederik de Wit took over.
The map is sold mounted, framed and glazed, although the frame and glazing can be remove to enable cost-effective and safe postage.
