Circle of Jean Jean-Francois Millet
Normandy Woman 1838
A highly decorative painting signed indistinctly with initials and dated 1838. The woman is resplendent in her best bonnet and shawl and dates to a period when Millet was known to have been painting his family and peasant life in Northern France. The design of her bonnet, shawl and chair link her with Northern France. This is an interesting painting requiring more research to help with authentication, so I am selling it as “Circle of Millet”.
Purchased at auction in Le Havre, Normandy, France.
Jean-François Millet 1814 –1875) was a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon School in rural France. Millet is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers; he can be categorized as part of the Realism art movement.
The painting could best be described as being a bit tatty. Nothing serious and is hangable in its present condition, however it would benefit from cleaning and some sympathetic restoration. There is craquelure to the paint surface and some minor abrasions with associated touch ins. The frame has restoration to the plasterwork.
