Pair of early C19th 'Grand Tour' souvenir patinated cast-lead lions mounted on rouge griotte marble plinth bases , copies of the Egyptian lions from The Vatican, Rome.
Cast lead lions or lionesses modelled in a lying, resting pose with crossed front paws and their tails wrapped across their rear flanks . Patinated to resemble bronze and mounted upon well-figured 'rouge griotte' marble rectangular bases.
Modelled after the pair of ancient Egyptian stone lion statues that stand in the 'Cortile Della Pigne' ( 'Courtyard of the Pinecone' ) Vatican Museum, Rome, Italy .
Some wear to the faces probably from cleaning and rubbing commensurate with age. The bodies with historic marks and minor dents and dings , having been caused by the nature of the soft lead medium , but no breaks or losses. Good consistent patination.
