Devonshire Longcase Clock, Mallet, Barnstaple

19th century
Description

A Devonshire longcase clock of good proportions. An oak and mahogany crossbanded case with a swan neck hood pediment. Brass capped hood columns and mahogany inlaid panel above and below the trunk door. An arched painted dial with church ruin scenes to the arch and corners. A seconds dial and date aperture. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell. This has a great provenance with the label to the case backboard and a stamp inside the trunk door.

John Mallett (and son) worked in Barnstaple from 1811 to 1856. They are well documented in Ponsfords' 'Devon Clocks and Clockmakers book'.

Height 7ft 4 " / 223 cms Width (at widest point at hood top) 20 " / 51 cms Depth 10" / 26 cms.
