A superb George III period Chippendale style mahogany bureau bookcase. The upper section has an over-hung dentil cornice with blind fret decorated frieze above two flame mahogany panelled doors with re-entrant corner mouldings opening to reveal an arrangement of three shelves and a bank of small drawers. The top is raised on a bureau base, the fall opening to reveal a well fitted interior with central cupboard flanked by secret sliding compartments and an arrangement of drawers and pigeonholes, above four oak lined drawers with brass ‘swan neck’ handles, raised on bracket feet.
Circa 1780.
Height 92? (234cm) Width 45? (114cm) Depth 22? (56cm)
Condition and Details of Restoration:
This item is in original structural condition and is completely sound. The original polish has been sympathetically revived, by our own craftsmen, by hand in the traditional manner. It has retained its original colour and patina, and the characterful old marks under the polish that might be expected on an item of this age and authenticity. In our opinion, the photographs are representative. The handles, while all of the period, are not all original to this item; there are minor differences to some. There have been minor repairs to some of the mouldings and blind fret over the years.
