Antique silver Bernex pocket watch originally retailed by Mann of Gloucester

The watch has a 15-jewel Swiss stem-winding movement, signed Bernex, which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover. This inner cover has a small indentation and light scratching.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for London (import mark), 1918 with an importer's mark for Arthur Rendell.

In 1907, an act came into force which meant that all imported watches had to be assayed in a UK assay office and marked with British import hallmarks. For this, a sponsor's mark was required. In this particular case, Arthur Rendell was an employee, and probably in charge, of the department that handled imported watches at a company called Pringles, the UK's largest wholesalers of jewellery, silverware, clocks and watches, so it was deemed relevant to use his initials.

The case is in good condition and the engine turned detail to the back of the watch is still nice and crisp.

The watch glass is in good condition.

The white enamel dial is signed with the name of the original retailer, W C Mann Ltd, Gloucester. Original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
