Youngs Antiques has dated this piece to the 1700s.
Both subjects have excellent faces and are well proportioned.

A lot of the polychrome has been lost and is very distressed and there are traces of the original gilding. There are also areas where there has been evidence of old woodworm and a couple of repairs. There are losses to the fingers of the cherubs hand and part of the cherubs foot. Areas of the sections of timber that make up the structure have slightly separated over time and three large later iron nails have been fixed through the front to the back , however it is still as solid as the day it was made. There is also a small burn mark just above the left wrist of Madonna where candles have been lit.
Overall condition - excellent
