A Museum Quality Late Victorian Collectors Cabinet by Holland & Sons. Circa 1890. Source, the British Museum. London. England.

19th century
Description

A magnificant and superlative cabinet made by possibly the finest cabinet maker of all time. Holland & sons were established in 1803 and undertook the finest work until 1942. They were awarded a prize at the great exhibition of 1851 for a superb bookcase and specialised in the commissioned manufacture of furniture for the major institutions of the era. This cabinet was built for the british museum. Holland & sons rivalled gillows of lancaster and london.

Every aspect, timber and fixing rings with ultimate quality, the locks were supplied by gibbons of wolverhampton established as fine lock smiths in 1670. The hinges, shoot bolts, handles and drawer catches are very fine and would be the best available at the time.

Beautifully figured, rich mahogany predominates and the drawers are based with oak. Velvet seals to all the door shuts and the inset campaign style drawer handle are in anodised brass. The drawers have retaining catches at the back so that the drawer may be pulled out to enable viewing or work on the collection housed within but not allowing the drawer to be inadvertantly dropped.

It is very seldom that an item of such quality becomes available for sale. This cabinet is both practical for the collector and, I believe, a good investment. The very best will always find a market and this piece fulfills every requirement in this respect.

Whatever the collection to be housed this cabinet will provide prestige and respectful quality to that collection.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
