Rue des Fontenelles has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
Following the example of the French-educated Belgian painter Alfred de Knyff (1819-1886), Baron adopted an austere, wintry style of landscape painting with a dull colour palette, called 'mode gris' by his contemporaries. In 1868 Baron became one of the founding members of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts, formed to react against the Belgian version of academicism and to advance Realist painting and artistic freedom.

Among Baron's students were Isidore Verheyden and Hippolyte de la Charlerie. In 1913 a street in Auderghem was named in his honor. There is a famous statue of Baron with a hat in his hand at Numur by Charles-Pierre Van der Stappen.
