Antique Georgian IVory Gavel - House Of Lords/cambridge University

This is a one-off! An antique carved ivory presentation gavel with both political and Cambridge University interest.
The ornately carved hande and head are amazing and extremely tactile. The silver mounted inscription reads: ''PRESENTED TO THE HOUSE OF LORDS for the use of THE LORD CHANCELLOR by William Sweeting
November 1829''.
The Lord Chancellor at the time was First Baronet of Lyndhurst, Southampton, Lord Lyndhurst, John Singleton Copley, lawyer and politician. He was educated at Trinity College Cambridge and called to the bar at Lincolns Inn in 1804. Amongst other seats held, he was the Member of Parliament for Cambridge University from 1826 to 1827, when he was appointed Lord Chancellor. He served three separate terms in the post, the last ending in 1846 and served under Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, during the reigns of King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria.
This is a wonderful piece of history.
