Victorian Majolica Monkey Wall Pocket W & R C1880

Description

This unusual VICTORIAN MAJOLICA MONKEY WALL POCKET dates from circa 1880.

The MONKEY is holding a large COCONUT SHELL which would hold a small arrangement of flowers, foliage or small fruit.

The pottery is marked to the bottom left corner with the impressed initials W & R within a diamond shaped lozenge.

Opinion is divided as to whether this is the mark of the Longton, Staffordshire Potters Wayte and Ridge or the Firm of Wittman & Roth, Importers of London. Either way he looks impressive when hung on the wall.

The condition is good. The bottom right corner of the tree bark has been reglued and overpainted.
