George III Silver Salt Cellar

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Chequers Antiques

An elegant late 18th century silver salt cellar made in London in 1794 by William Abdy II (who registered his mark in September 1790) with the original gilding in the bowl. Of oval shape, it stands on a quatrefoil foot and has a similarly shaped bowl which flares out to a reeded edge. There is a crest on one side (see photos) with a motto in a garter ‘Mea Gloria Fides’ (The Faith is My Glory); the crest appears to be a bird’s leg. The gilding inside the bowl appears to be original.
