Description

This RARE CARVED OAK POCKET WATCH STAND bears a shield-shaped plaque which is engraved 'HERNE'S OAK'. The back bears the hand-written detail 'August 31 1863 Herne's Oak, Windsor Park'.

In English folklore Herne the Hunter was a ghost who purportedly haunted a particular Oak Tree in Windsor Great Park. He is mentioned in Shakespeare's 1597 play 'The Merry Wives of Windsor'. The Tree, which became known as 'Herne's Oak', was blown down on 31st August 1863 and this lovely POCKET WATCH STAND was carved from its timber.

Windsor Great Park is part of The Crown Estate and soon to be the home of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan.
