Early Japy Freres Antique French Ormolu Rococo Clock

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1840 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A stunning and early ormolu antique French clock by Japy Freres and retailed by Marshall et Fils of Paris. It is beautifully modelled in finely gilded bronze, waisted shape formed of scrolling leaves and decorated with flowers. It sits upon its integral base supported by scroll feet. The pendulum can be glimpsed gentle swinging within the case.

The dial is also gilt bronze with 12 individual enamel cartouches and is complete with a finely detailed Rococo bezel with convex glass and original blued steel hands. The Marshall signature can be seen in the panel in the centre of the dial. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is by Japy Freres and is of high quality. It has the early Japy Freres mark on the backplate along with the mark of the retailer Marshall et Fils. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. It is the early version of the Pendule de Paris movement with outside hammer stop spring and would have had a silk suspension, this has been converted to the more reliable steel suspension at some time. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with slight wear and discolouration. The dial is also in excellent condition just some slight fading to some of the cartouches. The case is slightly skewed and on investigation has been from new!

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
