C19th Bronze Grand Tour Bust of Ajax

19th century
Description

C19th bronze Grand Tour bust of Ajax; depicting the Greek hero looking dexter, bearded and with flowing hair, his helmet cast with centaurs fighting soldiers, and crouching panthers below, the peak with a pair of eagles. His chest with a sash and a toga tied at his left shoulder. Raised on its original gilt bronze shaped plinth. Stamped GS (foundary mark) to the reverse. Well cast and chased with an excellent patination.

French circa 1860
