Christian Davies Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1750s.
The lower section has a wonderful fitted secretaire interior with drawers, pigeon holes and a central compartment which slides out via a concealed button to reveal an arrangement of secret drawers, with the finest mahogany dovetails and fitting absolutely perfectly almost creating a vacuum, such is the quality of the craftsmanship. Also with a further four oak lined drawers again with flame mahogany fronts and typical Gillows oval handles. Supported on slender splayed bracket feet. Stamped by Gillows of Lancaster and known as the Maxwell secretaire press as featured on page 65 of the Gillows Of Lancaster and London Volume 2 book by Susan Stuart. English circa 1792
