Antique Chest, 17th Century Ships Trunk, English Oak Coffer, Circa 1700

This is an antique chest dating to the late 17th century.
 
Raised on the extended stiles, this chest is of panelled construction held within robust 40mm thick, oak stock displaying carved detail to the front; the four panels featuring stylised flora in geometric mounts with Celtic overtones. The stiles repeating the theme beneath fluted detailing.
 
The dual panelled ends are dressed with the original iron loop handles and the back finished in four plain panels. Desirable hand-cut clasp nails visible in the lid construction.
 
The original key and lock still work and release the lid which lifts on the original iron strap hinges. Inside offers voluminous storage with a candle box to one end and a tantalisingly indistinct label to the rear.
 
Strong and heavy with solid joints and construction, delivered waxed, polished and ready for the home.
