Description

A Halifax pottery Slipware curfew in the 16th/17th century style, these curfews or couvre-feu were used to help bank the fires for the night and kept the ashes hot so in the morning it would be easy to reignite the fire with some kindling.

This curfew is very decorative with foliage and patterns, along with a fleur de lis central and two holes in the front for smoke to pass through.

There is some minor damage to the handle as it has been glued at some stage and there is also a small piece missing from the bottom right hand corner.

The overall condition is very good and it makes a very decorative piece of pottery for displaying on early oak furniture.
