Antique English Military Novelty Oak Barrel Table Vesta - Notts & Derby

Description

An absolutely wonderful novelty table top Vesta, Match Safe or Match Strike made from solid English Oak with a wonderful glossy waxed patina.

This magical vesta is operated by lifting the barrel exterior which will collect the match sitting underneath the lid and appear on the match holder on the top.

The back has a heavy textured mount which is where the Swan Vesta (non safety matches) would be struck .. the motto " Ubique" is mounted underneath meaning "Everywhere" and is the motto I believe of the British Army.

The front shows this was the property of the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) which was formed in 1881.

This is a wonderful quality and very unusual piece of English treen with the novelty factor being the icing on the cake.

Excellent condition measuring 5" tall and a lid diameter measuring 3 1/2".
