Superbly carved tripod base candlestand with circular top . The shaped tripod legs with carved claw feet . The base of the column with triple carved lion mask details. The column with tightly carved leaf detail and turned rings.

Excellent quality throughout, the dense heavy ebony or Macassar ebony , displaying some faint brown figuring in some areas of the column shaft and top .
In excellent original condition.
Amin Jaffer "Furniture from British India and Ceylon " p. 145 illustrates and discusses a solid ebony centre table produced in Madras , Southern India , an area famous for the manufacture of high quality ebony furniture. The table has lion moopodia support elements.

Amin Jaffer "Luxury Goodsfrom India" p.36 illustrates and discusses a solid carved ivory table of similar proportions and form to the table offered here and referred to as a "Teapoy" , referring to the Hindu translation for three-leg or tripod .
