Rare mid C19th Anglo-Indian carved solid ebony candlestand of outstanding quality.

Superbly carved tripod base candlestand with circular top . The shaped tripod legs with carved claw feet . The base of the column with triple carved lion mask details. The column with tightly carved leaf detail and turned rings. The circular top with a simple moulded edge , a carved ring beneath the top where the column joins the bearer.

Excellent quality throughout, the dense heavy ebony or Macassar ebony , displaying some faint brown figuring in some areas of the column shaft and top .

In excellent original condition.

*Amin Jaffer "Furniture from British India and Ceylon " p. 145 illustrates and discusses a solid ebony centre table produced in Madras , Southern India , an area famous for the manufacture of high quality ebony furniture. The table has lion moopodia support elements.

*Amin Jaffer "Luxury Goodsfrom India" p.36 illustrates and discusses a solid carved ivory table of similar proportions and form to the table offered here and referred to as a "Teapoy" , referring to the Hindu translation for three-leg or tripod .
