Japy Freres Ormolu and Sevres Porcelain Antique French Clock Set

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1870 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A beautiful antique French ormolu (finely gilded bronze) and Sevres type porcelain clock set. It is by the famous clockmaker Japy Freres and was retailed in London by Richard et Cie. It features a stunning set of porcelain panels with a deep cobalt blue ground, each signed to the reverse by the artist. The front panel and the urns have a charming romantic scene of a couple in country settings. The side panels are delicately painted with a classical urn of flowers and acanthus.

The set is classical in style with acanthus scrolls, gadrooning and goddess handles to the urns. The small panels have delicately applied porcelain 'jewels' to compliment the over-glaze gilt decoration. The dial is also porcelain and has a charming scene of a the lady with a cherub, possibly a depiction of Cupid. Please note that this style of clock does not have a glazed bezel over the dial or a rear door.

The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is an old replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video available of the clock running, please ask.

The Japy Freres mark is the 'Grande Medaille d Honour 1855' mark that the company used up until about 1890.

C. Allix, Carriage clocks, their history and development lists Richard & Cie - the company was founded in Paris in 1848 and added a branch in London in 1857. In 1867 the branch became Richard & Co. of 24 Cannon Street, London.

Brian Loomes, Watchmaker and clockmakers of the world, lists Richard & Co from Paris 1857 - 1881.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright some slight wear and discolouration. The porcelain is also in very good condition, some slight wear to the blue ground in places, some losses to the applied porcelain jewels and some very slight wear to the over-glaze gilt decoration in places.

Japy Freres clockmaker's mark and the importer / retailers mark of Richard et Cie on the movement backplate.

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
