17th Century Oak & Marquetry Coffer C.1660

17th century
Description

A very beautiful early oak coffer with three original fielded and arched marquetry panels inlaid with harewood, ebony, sycamore and holly of flower, vines and interlaced ribbons. The borders and stiles carved with lunettes, foliage and strapwork - some of the blind foliage some carving later and part of the chest's natural history.

Triple planked original oak top with superb colour and natural patination rising on hand hewn iron strap hinges. Strong and clean interior offering a large amount of storage space. Peg jointed throughout and extremely solidly made and heavy. The beautiful 16th century iinlays to the panels are rare and seldom found in such superb original condition.

In excellent condition for age with wonderful rich colour and deep natural sheen from around 350 years of care, wax and use. An 18th century iron strap repair at the back of one back leg which is not visible unless viewed from the back. There is a chip across the left hand front corner of the top which is old and worn smooth with years. Some evidence of old worm but dead and treated as is normal for oak of this age and not significant. The oak having developed a rock hard quality.

The coffer is very heavy indeed and it takes two men to lift it. Lid rises smoothly though and is in excellent original order also and retaining original iron escutcheon.

A superb and very beautiful example.

57 inches wide, 20 inches deep and 30 inches high.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
