Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian papier-mache decorative objects were crafted using compressed paper pulp or laminated paper sheets treated with oil and varnish before baking. This created a dense, durable material that was coated in black japanning lacquer and decorated with hand-painted scenes, gilding, or mother-of-pearl inlay during the mid-19th century.

Craftsmen combined molded papier-mache panels with internal wood framing to provide structural support for drawers and hinges. The exterior surface received multiple coats of black asphaltum varnish, polished smooth before adding mother-of-pearl shell fragments, hand-painted vignettes, and gilded scrollwork.

Authentic period pieces display fine craquelure across the dark lacquered ground, genuine iridescent mother-of-pearl set flush into the surface, significant weight relative to size, and historical wear on base edges or keyholes consistent with mid-Victorian age.

Position the cabinet on a neutral sideboard, dressing table, or bookshelf where its dark surface and detailed ornamentation can create visual contrast. Grouping it with brass candlesticks or contemporary glassware highlights the historical craftsmanship without cluttering the room.

Keep the object away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources that can warp compressed paper or degrade lacquer. Wipe surfaces gently using a clean, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or abrasive polishing compounds.
